Sleep inertia in automated driving: Post-sleep take-over and driving performance

نویسندگان

چکیده

Sleep is emerging as a new driver state in automated driving. Post-sleep performance impairments due to sleep inertia, the transitional phase from wakefulness that can take up 30 min, are potential safety issue. Take-over immediately after impaired and drivers perceive take-over critical. The aim of presented study was assess behavior driving during 10 min sleep. A with N = 31 conducted high-fidelity simulator. were assessed a) under alert baseline conditions b) awakening electroencephalography-confirmed stable 15 s resulting more errors compared baseline. Lane keeping dramatically first 3 recovered rapidly. Drivers drove slower speed less for at least min. results suggest human-machine interaction design should account drivers’ post-sleep performance.

Sleep apnoea and driving risk

Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) represents the most common organic cause of excessive daytime sleepiness. It has a prevalence of at least 1±4% according to different epidemiological studies, and depending on the diagnostic criteria used [1±4]. The prevalence of OSAS is highest among males in the 40±59 yr age group, being ~4±8% [4]. There is considerable evidence that sleepiness is a ma...

Sleep, driving and the workplace.

Sleepiness is increasingly recognised as a major preventable cause of accidents on the road and in the workplace.1-23 It contributes to up to 20% of road traffic accidents (RTAs), with sleep-related RTAs claiming an excess morbidity and mortality similar to that from alcohol-related accidents. Sleepy driving is a known risk factor for RTAs: sleepy drivers have more frequent RTAs, and drivers at...

Driving and obstructive sleep apnoea.

Driving is a skill requiring many simultaneous cerebral activities, mainly eye-hand coordination with accurate speed and direction computations. This high level of activity requires full concentration, as evidenced by the higher accident rates in those who use mobile phones while driving. There is very good evidence that inadequate sleep is an important cause of fatigue-related driving accident...

[Driving performance and auto accidents in patients with sleep apnea].

Obstructive sleep apnea is a common disorder in which the airway repetitively collapses during sleep; patients with sleep apnea are often inattentive and sleepy. This review discusses driving performance and automobile accidents in patients with sleep apnea. Finally, we discuss the effect of therapy upon driving performance and reported accidents in these subjects.
